Austin Police Golf Association (APGA)
The Austin Police Golf Assn. organized many years ago by Jay Eads and others went to sleep for awhile but in 2000 was re-invented, re-organized and is now very active with about 40 active member and several "occasional" players.
While called "Austin Police Golf Assn." because that is the way it was originally formed and how it is known throughout the area, we have many members who are employed or retired from non-law enforcement occupations. Heck, we even have a couple of retired fireman, so we accept almost anyone.
We feel we have developed a formula that allows all players, regardless of their skill level to compete on a fair basis even with the more talented golfers. We maintain scoring averages for all players and assign handicap points based on the player's most recent games played with us.
Each individual plays his own ball. (No more of that Florida Scramble stuff.) If you only get to play occasionally of course you want to play for your own score. We play the ball "up" so we improve our lies, and we play out of bounds as lateral hazards. We divide the players in half, and the players with the lower averages draw numbers, after play is complete, to determine which of the higher averaged golfers is his partner for that day. The two scores combined is the team's score.
Each player is responsible for paying for his own green/cart fees to the course. The association collects a mere $10.00 for prize money. We also have Closest to the Pin competition on each par 3. And, there is a $1.00 admin fee making the total fees for competition usually $15.00 + green/cart fees. The number of places paid is dependent on how many teams there are but last place is ALWAYS paid $20.00 ($10.00 each) Usually we have enough players to pay 1st, 2nd and 3rd, at least.
We won't bore you with all of the details here but want you to understand that anyone and everyone has a chance to be a winner, regardless of their skill level. Most importantly, we have a great time and you can see people you haven't seen in a long time.
We play every Thursday morning at various courses around the area including, Star Ranch, Terra Vista, Shadow Glen, Bluebonnet Hill, Morris Williams, Jimmy Clay, Roy Kizer, Spicewood Springs and others.
We urge anyone wanting to enjoy golf with us to contact either John Hunt or Bob Hasselman for additional details. And, anyone who joins us is welcome to invite others to join us either as regular or occasional guests. Many of us are retired so play most every week but many others are still employed so frequency of their play may be limited by work schedule, etc.
Come join us!
